Area Information

The first known white man to settle in Rock County alongside the Winnebago Indians was Joseph Thiebault, a French trapper who came to the area in the 1820s. Caleb Blodgett, another of the earliest pioneers and merchants dubbed this place New Albany but a citizen committee soon renamed it.

Although the exact history remains disputed, it seems that the name Beloit was coined from a French word, Balotte, which means "handsome ground." The spelling was then fashioned after Detroit, which the community saw as a great symbol of trade and growth. Beloit was founded in 1836, incorporated as a village February 24, 1846 and officially incorporated as a city by the State of Wisconsin on March 31, 1856.

The citizens adopted a Council-Manager form of government in 1929. One hundred and forty-six years after incorporation, the City of Beloit covers approximately 17 square miles.

The area's climate is a temperate one. The growing season is about 175 days. The mean temperature in July is about 73 degrees. In January the average mean temperature is around 19 degrees. The average precipitation is 35 inches per year with about 29 inches falling as snow.

Area events and attractions include Heritage Days, Birds and Blooms, the Farmer's Market and Winterfest, a 2-day festival that features toboggan races, a Klondike derby, indoor carnival and a variety of family activities and special events. Of a more historical interest is the Angel Museum, which displays several thousand of the more than 12,000 angels in the Berg collection and over 900 black angels donated by TV host Oprah Winfrey.

Another historic point of interest is Beckman Mill. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is one of Wisconsin's only restored working gristmills. Built in 1868, the mill has been restored to how it looked and operated in its hey days of the 1920s. The mill also has a newly rebuilt dam, a one-of-a-kind fish ladder, picnic area with shelter and wildflower garden.

You'll also enjoy the Hanchett-Bartlett Homestead, the internationally renowned Logan Museum of Anthropology, the Wright Museum of Fine Art, the American Industrial Art Gallery, Stone Water Tower and Water Works Pump House, the circa 1869 Tiffany Bridge (the world's only remaining 5-arch stone railway bridge), the Bushnell Wheeler House, South Beloit Historical Society and the Beloit College Poetry Gardens.

Hospitals and medical centers in and near Beloit include the Beloit Memorial Hospital, the Mercy Health System, the H. Douglas Singer Mental Health Center and Rockford Memorial Hospital.

Area parks include Beckman Mill Park, Big Hill Park, Happy Hollow Park, Krueger Park, Riverside Park, Sweet Allyn Park, Telfer Park, Turtle Creek Floodplain, Horace White Park, Mechanics Green Park, Wooton Park, Water Tower Park, Armstrong Eddy Park and more.

You can also enjoy America's favorite pastime at its best! You'll find major league fun at minor league prices watching a Beloit Snapper's game, a Class A affiliate team of the Minnesota Twins.
